Direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One directed by Takashi Yamazaki, set in 1949 as Japan struggles to rebuild and the Shikishima family faces Godzilla's return.
It took the lights going down at the New York Film Festival. After months of trailers referring only to a “new threat,” Godzilla Minus Zero finally showed its hand at its September 26 world premiere: Ghidorah is in the movie. And Takashi Yamazaki is not treating Godzilla's famous adversary as a tiny final-act surprise. The three-headed monster is directly tied to the new disaster striking Japan in 1949.
Godzilla Minus One made its monster terrifying partly by giving viewers something worth destroying first. The full theatrical trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero suggests Takashi Yamazaki has not forgotten that lesson. The sequel is larger, its response operation is more organized and Godzilla looks considerably harder to kill, but the film is still beginning with people who had only just convinced themselves life could become normal again.
