Practical Magic 2: Bullock and Kidman Still Have the Magic, the Movie Less So

By Clarel

Practical Magic 2 is never quite as bad as its most cumbersome passages suggest because the returning cast already possesses the affection and charisma the production is trying so hard to manufacture. Bullock, Kidman, Wiest and Channing can still make a kitchen, a glance or a family argument feel enchanted. That is precisely why the plot machinery, digital flourishes and two-hour-ten-minute runtime become so frustrating: the movie already had its strongest spell standing in front of the camera. It simply needed to trust the Owens women more.

PROS

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman instantly recover the chemistry that remains the film's strongest asset.
Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing give the material surrounding Jet and Franny an emotional weight the screenplay rarely reaches elsewhere.
Susanne Bier occasionally recaptures the warmth, autumnal romance and lightly eccentric atmosphere associated with the original.

CONS

The 130-minute running time stretches a fairly straightforward story into several strangely inert passages.
The sequel reverses part of the original film's emotional resolution simply to restart the same family curse.
