007 First Light: perhaps James Bond needed a game to become young again

007 First Light succeeds because it does not search for the best impersonation of a cinematic Bond. Patrick Gibson plays a man young enough for his arrogance to remain dangerous rather than iconic, while IO Interactive builds a world around him that immediately feels like Bond. The campaign could lose some length, and PC Gamer is right to question parts of its emotional ambition. The important achievement remains: this Bond does not need a film in order to exist.

PROS

Patrick Gibson is convincing as a young James Bond
Standalone origin independent of the film continuities
Excellent international espionage atmosphere

CONS

Emotional development is shallower than promised according to some critics
A generous campaign develops pacing lulls
