BioEden review: a management game more interested in healing a world than conquering it

By Vever

By rejecting conquest, competition and even the fear of failure, BioEden finds an unusual tone for a strategy game. A recovering planet and returning species create a more tangible reward than another victory counter. Broken Arms Games is more cautious with the fiction surrounding those ideas: the Great Unraveling, five guilds and their competing philosophies provide an appealing framework without becoming a deeply developed story. BioEden is strongest when its ecological message and the player's actual actions are saying the same thing.

PROS

A coherent inversion of 4X conventions toward restoration
Warm, readable solarpunk art direction
Returning wildlife gives progression a tangible emotional payoff

CONS

The Great Unraveling remains background lore more than a developed story
The five guilds lack sustained narrative personality
