Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — Grief as a World, Not Just a Theme

By Yasmine

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 turns an immediately powerful fantasy premise into an intimate story about loss, memory, and our inability to release what we love. Its second act intelligently reframes the world, the cast gives remarkable texture to the dialogue, and Lorien Testard's music functions like a second narrative voice. Some essential context remains easy to miss in optional material, but the whole remains extraordinarily controlled. Few recent RPGs reach the credits with so many scenes, faces, and melodies still lingering.

PROS

An exceptionally effective emotional opening
Warm, flawed, superbly performed characters
Outstanding second-act narrative reframing

CONS

Important relationship development remains optional
Some late revelations require considerable attention to fully untangle
