Helldivers 2: gaming's best fascism joke became a war millions of players write together
Helldivers 2 has become far more than a very funny Starship Troopers imitation. Arrowhead understood that the satire would work better if players actively participated in the system being mocked: obeying orders, accepting absurd losses and describing every massacre as a victory for freedom. Galactic Campaigns and Devoid of Liberty continue improving that collective war, even if accumulating Warbonds, collaborations and controversies sometimes threaten its clarity. Few live-service games have transformed their community into the protagonist this naturally.
