NBA 2K17: when a basketball sim wanted to capture the life around the court

By Vever

NBA 2K17 is as much a celebration of NBA culture as it is a simulation. Visual Concepts captured lighting, arena sound, commentary, rituals and even dead-ball moments to create something closer to a televised season than a collection of matches. MyCareer is lighter and more likable than its predecessor, helped considerably by Michael B. Jordan, although practices and scheduled activities sometimes consume the pacing. The persistent VC economy has aged much worse than the presentation around it. A decade later, the showmanship still holds up remarkably well.

PROS

Exceptional broadcast-style presentation
Rotating commentators substantially reduce repetition
Arenas have stronger individual visual and audio identities

CONS

Off-court sequences can take too long for what they actually say
Studio-host animation is much less convincing than the surrounding presentation
