HBO still has not announced an exact premiere date for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2. It has, however, given viewers something much more useful than the previous broad 2027 window.

HBO and HBO Max Content chairman Casey Bloys confirmed the series will return during the next Emmy eligibility period, which ends on May 31, 2027. That places the second season somewhere in the first five months of next year.

Westeros is moving unusually quickly this time

The first season premiered on January 18, 2026 and completed its six-episode run in February. Even a late-May return would therefore produce a gap of roughly fifteen months.

That is a very different rhythm from House of the Dragon. HBO's larger Game of Thrones prequel has required much longer gaps between seasons as it deals with sprawling sets, major battles, dragons and an extensive visual-effects workload.

Dunk and Egg operate at the other end of Westeros. A smaller cast of central characters, more contained stories and far fewer effects-heavy sequences give the production room to move faster.

Season 2 has already finished filming

This is not merely an optimistic scheduling target for a production that has yet to start. Peter Claffey, who plays Ser Duncan the Tall, has said filming wrapped in August.

HBO had already ordered the second season before Season 1 premiered, allowing the production team to avoid waiting for months of audience data before beginning the next chapter.

That early renewal now looks particularly significant. In an era when viewers regularly wait several years between seasons of expensive streaming dramas, HBO has managed to keep this one much closer to a traditional annual schedule.

The Sworn Sword changes the scale of Dunk's problem

Season 1 adapted The Hedge Knight, the first of George R. R. Martin's published Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. Season 2 moves to the second story, The Sworn Sword.

The tournament at Ashford is gone. Dunk and Egg instead enter the service of Ser Eustace Osgrey and become involved in a local dispute shaped by drought, land, water and the political wounds left by the Blackfyre Rebellion.

It remains distinctly small-scale by Game of Thrones standards, which is part of the appeal. Westeros can be dangerous without putting the Iron Throne at the center of every conversation.

Claffey has also teased “a lot more sadness” in the second season and described the story as a very different challenge for Dunk. The cheerful wandering-knight energy is apparently going to take a few hits.

HBO is building a steadier Game of Thrones pipeline

The fast turnaround also says something about HBO's broader franchise strategy. House of the Dragon can remain the enormous prestige production while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms fills a different role: shorter seasons, intimate stories and potentially much more regular releases.

Bloys included the show alongside upcoming seasons of The Pitt, The White Lotus and The Gilded Age when discussing HBO's pre-May 2027 slate. Dunk and Egg are no longer being treated like an experimental side project.

That gives HBO a useful way to keep Westeros present even when its more expensive productions need another year in the oven.

The exact date is still missing

HBO has not committed to a particular month yet. The firm deadline for now is simply before May 31, 2027.

With filming already complete, however, most of the uncertainty has moved from “will it be ready?” to the much simpler question of where HBO wants to place it on the calendar.
