Start with The Fantastic Four: First Steps

This is the easiest recommendation on the list. Kevin Feige has explicitly said that The Fantastic Four: First Steps leads directly into Doomsday, and Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are all returning.

First Steps also establishes Earth-828, the retro-futuristic universe occupied by Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben. Feige has described Doomsday in terms of worlds literally colliding and revealed that the Baxter Building set built for First Steps is being populated by far more characters in the Avengers movie.

You can safely skip older Fantastic Four movies if the objective is MCU preparation. This is the version Doomsday is using.

Thunderbolts* establishes a team that already exists

Doomsday does not begin with every hero standing alone waiting for Nick Fury to make phone calls. Thunderbolts* leaves the MCU with another functioning super-team, and most of its surviving principal players are in the announced Avengers cast.

Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour and Hannah John-Kamen are all part of Doomsday. That makes Thunderbolts* more useful than several technically newer MCU releases.

Black Widow is useful background for Yelena and Alexei. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier fills in Bucky and John Walker. Neither is required if you remember those characters well enough.

Watch both seasons of Loki

Loki is still the cleanest television explanation for what happened to the MCU's timeline after Endgame. It defines branches, variants, the TVA and the increasingly unstable relationship between different realities without requiring a stack of separate movies to do the job.

Tom Hiddleston is also officially part of Doomsday's ensemble. Season 2 leaves Loki in a radically different position from the mischievous Thor antagonist most casual viewers remember.

This is one case where the series really is worth treating as homework.

Infinity War and Endgame are the old Avengers foundation

Neither movie introduces Doctor Doom. Both explain why the Avengers arriving in Doomsday are no longer the team that fought Loki in 2012.

Tony Stark is gone. Sam Wilson carries the Captain America identity. Thor has followed his own post-Endgame path. Steve Rogers was given what looked like an ending, which is suddenly relevant again because Marvel's Doomsday marketing has explicitly confirmed Chris Evans' return.

If you remember all of that clearly, move on. There is no prize for rewatching three hours of Endgame purely out of administrative duty.

Brave New World catches up with Captain America

Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson and Danny Ramirez's Joaquin Torres are both in the announced Doomsday cast. Captain America: Brave New World is therefore the fastest way to see where that branch of the MCU currently stands.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gives Sam's transition much more room, but Brave New World is sufficient preparation if time is limited.

Wakanda Forever covers three returning players at once

Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Tenoch Huerta Mejía are returning for Doomsday. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever establishes Shuri as Black Panther, M'Baku's position in Wakanda and Namor's relationship with the surface world.

That makes it unusually efficient viewing for a crossover movie already confirmed to involve Wakandan characters.

Do not forget Shang-Chi

Simu Liu is back. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings remains his only necessary MCU chapter and contains everything Doomsday viewers need to know about the character.

The post-credit scene is worth staying for again. It deliberately connects the Ten Rings to the wider superhero world while leaving their deeper origin unresolved.

For the X-Men, do not watch everything

Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer are among the legacy X-Men actors announced for Doomsday.

A full Fox marathon is excessive. X-Men from 2000 establishes Xavier, Magneto, Cyclops and Mystique. X2 adds Nightcrawler and remains one of the clearest demonstrations of the group's internal relationships. Days of Future Past then provides a useful crash course in the franchise's timeline gymnastics and multiple generations of mutants.

The Last Stand can add more Beast context. It is not mandatory.

Deadpool & Wolverine is the bridge

Feige has described Deadpool & Wolverine as only scratching the surface of the legacy X-Men material that Doomsday explores more deeply. That alone makes it useful preparation.

Its bigger contribution is conceptual. The film demonstrates that characters from older Marvel movie universes can now participate in MCU multiverse stories instead of existing as nostalgic references outside the continuity.

Channing Tatum's Gambit, introduced there, is officially returning in Doomsday. Deadpool himself was not part of the original announced lineup.

Thor and Ant-Man are optional catch-ups

Thor is confirmed to return, and Paul Rudd's Scott Lang is also part of the ensemble. Thor: Love and Thunder is useful if Thor's post-Endgame status is hazy. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania does the same for Scott.

Quantumania is less essential than it once appeared. Its Kang-heavy setup belonged to an earlier version of Marvel's Avengers plans, before Doomsday shifted the center of the story to Doctor Doom.

Brand New Day and VisionQuest are current, not automatically required

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived on July 31, 2026, so anyone watching the MCU chronologically before Doomsday will naturally encounter it. Marvel has not, however, placed Spider-Man among the characters publicly confirmed in the initial Doomsday lineup.

VisionQuest arrives October 14 on Disney+. It brings Paul Bettany's Vision back, includes James Spader's Ultron and completes the television trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued through Agatha All Along. Marvel has not publicly identified it as direct Doomsday setup.

The same rule keeps Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, Wonder Man and several other recent Marvel shows out of a strict Doomsday catch-up list. They may matter later. They are not currently required homework for this movie.

The shortest sensible watchlist

• Avengers: Infinity War • Avengers: Endgame • Loki Season 1 • Loki Season 2 • The Fantastic Four: First Steps • Thunderbolts* • Captain America: Brave New World • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings • X-Men • X2 • X-Men: Days of Future Past • Deadpool & Wolverine

That is the manageable version. Thirteen entries instead of treating the Marvel Studios logo as a legally binding instruction to consume everything made since 2008.
