A phone call ended three years of uncertainty
Maridueña said he was traveling in Japan with friends when Gunn called. Until that moment, he had no guarantee that playing Jaime Reyes in the 2023 Blue Beetle movie would lead to another appearance.
That uncertainty was reasonable. Blue Beetle arrived during the awkward final stretch of the old DC film regime, after Gunn and Peter Safran had already begun planning a largely new shared universe. Several prominent actors from the previous continuity did not make the transition.
Jaime was always treated differently, but the rules around him were unusually fuzzy.
Gunn had preserved the character, not necessarily the movie around him
Back in 2023, Gunn described Blue Beetle as the first character in the DCU while separately calling Superman the first full DCU movie. It effectively left Jaime Reyes standing between two continuities.
Ángel Manuel Soto's film made that possible because it operated largely on its own. Jaime's origin, the Scarab and the Reyes family did not require viewers to follow the collapsing DCEU around them.
What was missing was an actual second appearance. Gunn's comments established intent. Man of Tomorrow establishes continuity.
Jaime is joining a much more connected movie
The Superman follow-up brings David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult back as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, with Lars Eidinger playing Brainiac. Its wider cast draws heavily from other parts of the developing DCU.
Milly Alcock returns as Supergirl, while Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion and Edi Gathegi reprise Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner and Mister Terrific. Aaron Pierre also brings John Stewart from Lanterns into the film.
Maridueña's presence therefore matters beyond one returning actor. Blue Beetle is now being placed inside the crossover structure that the 2023 movie could only gesture toward.
His actual job in the story remains secret
Neither Maridueña nor Gunn has explained how large Jaime's role will be. There is no public confirmation yet that he is part of the central Superman-Luthor conflict with Brainiac, nor any detailed description of how Blue Beetle enters the story.
That leaves several possibilities open, particularly because DC Studios has also explored an animated Blue Beetle continuation. Man of Tomorrow may be a destination for the character or simply the first bridge into something larger.
DC's reboot is becoming selective rather than absolute
Blue Beetle is a useful example of what Gunn's reset actually looks like several years later. Some roles were recast. Some stories ended. Others could be carried across when their existing versions did not create a continuity problem.
Maridueña's Jaime Reyes was unusually well positioned for that treatment: a self-contained origin, little dependence on the old shared universe and an actor Gunn had publicly supported from the beginning.
The uncertainty is finally over for the actor, even if the details are still hidden. Man of Tomorrow completed principal photography in August and is scheduled for July 9, 2027.
