The sensible conclusion is that Johnson and MGK were intentionally spending time together.

Reports describe the pair spending several hours together in Manhattan, with Page Six also placing them at Estela restaurant.
Johnson was later photographed returning toward her hotel with MGK still appearing in the night's sequence of images.
