Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ on September 2. The film opened in theaters on May 22 and has since moved through digital and physical home-video releases before reaching the platform where the characters first became a major streaming attraction.

A film release with its own supporting lineup

Disney+ will release the first two episodes of the Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Official Podcast on the same date. The video production was filmed on the movie's Adelphi Base Bar set and brings in members of the creative team and cast, including Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Ludwig Göransson, Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver.

LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian completes the trio. The animated special revisits material from all three seasons of The Mandalorian as a comedic retelling aimed in part at younger viewers.

That combination gives September 2 a broader purpose than simply putting an already released movie behind the Disney+ subscription. It turns one piece of theatrical inventory into a small franchise event, with behind-the-scenes material and a separate family-oriented production arriving around it.

The franchise comes back to the platform that built it

The Mandalorian was one of Disney+'s defining launch-era originals when its first season debuted in 2019. The feature film reversed that relationship by taking Din Djarin and Grogu to theaters, where Jon Favreau directed their first big-screen adventure.

The movie runs 133 minutes and is written by Favreau, Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, with Sigourney Weaver joining the story as Colonel Ward and Jeremy Allen White voicing Rotta the Hutt.

Disney+'s wider September schedule covers a much larger mix of programming, but the service has effectively reserved one of the month's earliest dates for the characters that helped define its original Star Wars offering.
