McGregor has made his position on returning to Star Wars consistently clear since Obi-Wan Kenobi ended in 2022.
He wants to play the character again.
At the Edinburgh International Film Festival, however, he revealed that the conversation has moved slightly beyond simply saying yes to a hypothetical phone call.
McGregor said he has casually discussed possible Obi-Wan stories with Dave Filoni, now Lucasfilm's President and Chief Creative Officer.
His most workable idea involves finding Yoda
The clearest pitch begins after Revenge of the Sith.
At the end of Episode III, Obi-Wan retreats to Tatooine to watch over Luke while Yoda disappears into exile on Dagobah. Both Jedi survive the purge, but they are separated under Imperial rule.
McGregor thinks that separation could become a story, with Obi-Wan attempting to reach or locate Yoda.
He described his conversation with Filoni as casual. There is no indication that Lucasfilm commissioned the pitch or has a screenplay based on it in development.
He also joked about an Obi-Wan and Hera romance
McGregor's other idea is considerably less compatible with the timeline, which he freely acknowledged.
When his wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead joined Ahsoka as Hera Syndulla, McGregor started joking about creating a major love story between Hera and Obi-Wan.
The Hera seen in Ahsoka lives in the post-Return of the Jedi era, years after Obi-Wan's death.
McGregor admitted that the characters belong to different periods, making the idea read more like a playful family pitch than evidence of anything Lucasfilm is considering.
Lucasfilm has not announced an Obi-Wan continuation
That remains the central fact behind every new quote about McGregor's possible return.
Disney+ released Obi-Wan Kenobi as a six-part limited series in 2022. Since its finale, Lucasfilm has not officially announced a second season, an Obi-Wan movie or another production centered on McGregor's version of the character.
His repeated enthusiasm confirms that the actor wants to return. It does not confirm that the studio currently has a project for him.
Dave Filoni is now the obvious person to pitch
McGregor's conversation with Filoni does carry more institutional weight in 2026 than it once would have.
In January, Lucasfilm announced that Filoni would become President and Chief Creative Officer, leading the company's creative direction alongside Co-President Lynwen Brennan.
Kathleen Kennedy stepped away from studio leadership to return to full-time producing.
If another Obi-Wan story is going to move forward, Filoni is now one of the key people who would have to see a reason for it to exist.
There is still room in Obi-Wan's timeline
The franchise does not lack space in which to place another story.
The 2022 series takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, leaving several years before Obi-Wan meets Luke again in A New Hope.
That gap could theoretically accommodate another mission without changing the character's established fate.
A search for Yoda would also build on an existing relationship from the films rather than requiring the story to invent another major connection during Obi-Wan's exile.
McGregor has never hidden how much he wants to keep the role
The actor says he enjoyed making the Disney+ series and continues to describe Obi-Wan as a character he loves playing.
He has said he would be open to returning in either another series or a feature film.
That enthusiasm follows a comeback that already seemed unlikely once. McGregor returned to the role in 2022, 17 years after Revenge of the Sith, with Hayden Christensen also returning as Darth Vader.
The series gave him the chance to bridge the confident Jedi general of the prequels and the older hermit Luke eventually meets.
A pitch is still a long way from a greenlight
The Yoda idea has a plausible place in continuity, a willing lead actor and at least one informal conversation with the person currently directing Lucasfilm's creative strategy.
What it does not have is the machinery of an announced production: no confirmed development, writer, director, schedule or Lucasfilm statement.
For now, another Obi-Wan story remains exactly what McGregor says it is — something he would very much like to do.
After all those years waiting in the Tatooine desert, patience may be one Jedi skill that transfers unusually well to Hollywood.
