Gamescom enters its public run from August 26 to 30 with more than 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries. International companies account for 70 percent of the total.
Last year had 1,568 exhibitors from 72 countries, also with a 70 percent international share. The 2026 show therefore grows in company count without simply becoming more international by percentage.
The important record is occupancy, not floor area
Gamescom already used 233,000 square meters of gross exhibition space in 2025. That number itself has not increased this year.
For 2026, however, every available exhibition area has been booked for the first time. Gamescom and Koelnmesse first announced that milestone on July 21 and followed it in August with the final pre-show exhibitor figures.
The distinction matters because it changes the next growth decision. Adding exhibitors within the same allocation has reached its obvious limit.
Organizers say they are working on expansion concepts from 2027 onward. They have not yet announced a specific additional hall, a new target floor area or a finished layout.
More than 420 indie companies are part of the squeeze
One of the sharpest increases is happening inside the indie area. More than 420 companies are represented there this year, up from 364 in 2025.
That section has to coexist with the enormous consumer installations built by major publishers and hardware companies, national pavilions and the business infrastructure used for meetings throughout the week.
Gamescom now has 47 country pavilions or group stands representing 40 countries. There were 40 representing 35 countries last year. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Morocco and Nigeria are among the new additions for 2026.
Demand from visitors is showing the same pressure
Saturday tickets were already sold out before the show opened, along with the event's wildcard allocation.
That does not make 2026 a visitor-attendance record yet. The previous edition attracted 357,000 people from 128 countries, including more than 34,000 trade visitors. This year's final attendance figure will only be known after the doors close.
Opening Night Live ran on August 25, followed by the main Gamescom dates from August 26 through August 30.
Gamescom is also consuming space as a business and political event
The exhibition floor is only one part of what Cologne now has to accommodate. Gamescom's 2026 business program lists more than 380 speakers, 230 sessions and 18 stages.
The Gamescom Congress takes place on August 27 and will be opened by German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Its program reaches beyond product announcements into politics, education, science and the broader use of games in society.
Gamescom Invest Circle runs the same day, connecting selected games and GameTech start-ups with investors, publishers and strategic partners. That initiative began in 2023.
Expansion is now a practical question rather than a growth slogan
Gamescom and Koelnmesse have not said exactly what the 2027 expansion will look like. For now, they are describing concepts being developed to unlock additional capacity while improving the visitor experience.
That caution is worth keeping. A fully booked 2026 edition demonstrates demand for more space; it does not tell us how much extra capacity can realistically be added next year.
The 2026 event closes in Cologne on August 30.
