Murphy shared the update at the American Horror Story Season 13 premiere on September 23.
Asked by Entertainment Tonight about Glee, he said he had finished the script roughly an hour before the interview.
Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan worked on the material with him, putting all three original co-creators back around the same project.
The most important caveat arrived immediately: nobody has read it
Murphy did not announce a network or streaming order.
There is no production start, episode count or premiere window.
He also said that nobody has actually read the completed script yet.
His intention is to write a couple of episodes and then see how the material lands, particularly with people who made the original series.
That puts the project somewhere meaningfully beyond casual reunion talk but still well short of a greenlit revival.
Murphy has already called around 10 original cast members
The creator says he has been in contact with roughly 10 members of the old ensemble.
He did not identify them.
Murphy described the conversations as warm, with plenty of questions and broad enthusiasm for the idea.
That is not the same thing as 10 signed returning actors.
Since the cast has not seen the script, there is currently no basis for saying whether this is designed as a full reunion, a handful of legacy appearances or a new group of characters with old faces passing through.
Lea Michele has publicly said she is open to returning
At least one original star has already attached her own name to the possibility.
On September 11, Lea Michele said that Glee still holds a special place for her and made clear that she would be willing to follow Murphy back to the series.
That is an expression of interest rather than casting news.
Now that a script exists, the difference becomes more important. Wanting to return does not tell us whether Rachel Berry appears in the material or what Murphy would actually ask Michele to do.
Two months ago this was still only a “new incarnation”
The idea has moved quickly.
In late July, Murphy said the series had “come back around” because younger viewers were continuing to discover it years after its original run.
That resurgence made him wonder whether audiences might want some kind of new incarnation.
By September, that thought had become a script.
The word “reboot” is now being used around the project, but Murphy has not defined whether his version restarts the premise, continues the original continuity or attempts something between those models.
The difficult part is deciding what Glee actually means without the original high-school setup
The series ended in 2015 after six seasons, which makes simply restoring its original arrangement impossible.
Rachel, Kurt, Mercedes, Artie, Blaine and the rest of the ensemble had already grown far beyond being McKinley students by the finale.
A new version therefore has to decide what part of the original is essential: those characters, the school, the show-choir structure, the collision of satire and melodrama, or some combination of all four.
That is why a generational reset remains plausible even though Murphy has not announced one. The basic engine can be inherited surprisingly easily: outsiders, a supposedly uncool choir program, competition, ambition and far too many songs for one Ohio high school.
The original three creators are back at the keyboard
Falchuk and Brennan's involvement matters beyond having familiar executive-producer names attached to an old property.
Glee began with Brennan's screenplay concept before Murphy and Falchuk helped reshape it for television.
All three share creator credit and formed the core writing partnership behind the show's beginning.
The new material is therefore coming from the team that originally established Glee's strange balance of school comedy, vicious satire, teenage melodrama and pop covers performed with complete emotional commitment.
Any reunion would also have to confront who is missing
A 2026 Glee cannot be an untouched photograph of the original ensemble.
Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera died after becoming central members of the show's cast.
That reality inevitably changes what any story built around the original characters could look like.
Murphy has not said which characters appear in his new script or explained how it approaches those absences.
There is no useful reason to invent that answer for him.
Glee still represents an unusual piece of television business
When it launched in 2009, the series turned weekly television covers into a commercial extension of the show itself.
It eventually earned six Emmy wins from 40 nominations and pushed multiple cast members into international prominence.
Rebuilding that mechanism in 2026 would not simply mean copying it.
Television distribution, music consumption, social platforms and the way a song becomes a hit have all changed dramatically since New Directions was performing every week on Fox.
A revived Glee may therefore have as much to reconsider about how it reaches viewers as about who stands in the choir room.
For now, “script” remains the operative word
There is a completed piece of writing.
Murphy wants to write more, has spoken with around 10 former cast members and describes their initial response as enthusiastic.
That is substantially more concrete than a creator feeling nostalgic on a red carpet.
It is still not an order, a production or a premiere date.
Before McKinley High can reopen the choir room, the people Murphy hopes to bring back still need to read what he has written.
