Hulu has officially renewed Furious for a second season. The announcement arrives three days before the final episode of its eight-part debut season.

According to Variety, the series has emerged as a breakout title for the streamer, with viewing increasing week over week since its July 27 premiere.

The renewal arrives while Season 1 is still growing

Furious launched with three episodes before switching to weekly Monday releases. Hulu therefore made its decision before audiences had seen how the first story ends.

There is no Season 2 release date yet, and Hulu has not announced a production schedule or story details. For now, the order itself is the news.

The timing gives creator Elizabeth Meriwether considerably more certainty than many first-year streaming shows receive. Development on the next chapter can begin without waiting months for a decision after the finale.

The series is built around two competing versions of justice

Emmy Rossum stars as FBI agent Alice Black, who is hunting a calculating female serial killer played by Lola Petticrew. Their stories gradually intersect as the series makes the distinction between justice and revenge increasingly uncomfortable.

Scoot McNairy and Quincy Tyler Bernstine also star, while Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang and Steve Way appear as guest stars during the first season.

Meriwether created, wrote and executive produced the series after New Girl, The Dropout and Dying for Sex. Rossum is also an executive producer through Composition 8.

Its roots go back to Black Widow

Furious is loosely inspired by Bob Rafelson's 1987 psychological thriller Black Widow rather than functioning as a direct remake.

The older film also revolved around an investigator pursuing a woman connected to a series of dead men. Furious retains the female cat-and-mouse structure while substantially changing the characters, motivations and social context around it.

Brian Kirk directed the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer. 20th Television and Searchlight Television produce the series.

Hulu is committing before the curve flattens

The renewal is notable less because a successful series received another season than because Hulu made the call while the first one is still gaining viewers.

Season 1 concludes on August 31. Season 2 is already guaranteed.
