Gary Oldman has added a particularly interesting claim to Hollywood's longest-running current casting conversation.

Speaking on Canada's The Morning Show, Oldman said he believes the producers have already chosen the next James Bond and are simply waiting to announce the decision.

He did not claim to know the selected actor's identity.

That distinction immediately matters in a franchise where reported shortlists and personal preferences can turn into apparent casting news within hours.

Oldman wants Jack Lowden to get the call

Oldman's preferred candidate is not difficult to understand.

Jack Lowden stars alongside him in Slow Horses as River Cartwright, and Lowden has repeatedly been reported among the actors associated with the Bond search.

Oldman said he was keeping his fingers crossed for his co-star.

He did not say Lowden had been cast. His comments make two separate points: he believes a choice has already been made, and he hopes that choice happens to be Lowden.

Amazon MGM has not announced a new Bond

The studio's official position remains considerably more restrained.

Amazon MGM publicly confirmed in May that the search for the next James Bond was underway. It also said it did not intend to discuss individual candidates or other casting details while that process continued.

There has been no official announcement naming Daniel Craig's successor.

Oldman's claim should therefore be treated as an unconfirmed piece of information from outside the production rather than a studio reveal.

The auditions themselves are real

The broader casting process is not speculation.

Amazon MGM began auditions in 2026 and brought in casting director Nina Gold to help find the next actor to play Ian Fleming's spy.

Lowden is one of several names reported around the search. Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harris Dickinson have also been linked to the role in industry reporting, while Louis Partridge has attracted interest and Tom Francis was reported to have auditioned.

None of those names has been confirmed as the next Bond.

Steven Knight's comments make the timing more intriguing

Oldman's statement arrived close to another interesting update from screenwriter Steven Knight.

Knight has completed a first draft of the next Bond screenplay. Asked whether he was writing with a particular actor in mind, he indicated that knowing who the person is can make the process easier while stressing that the character still comes first.

His answer does not formally reveal that a deal has been signed, but it does suggest the creative team may already have a clearer sense of Bond's next incarnation than the public does.

Denis Villeneuve is the part Amazon has officially confirmed

The next film's creative team is much less mysterious than its star.

Denis Villeneuve will direct, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing and Tanya Lapointe executive producing. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the screenplay.

The movie will also be the first Bond feature developed under Amazon MGM's expanded creative control of the franchise following its new arrangement with Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

Villeneuve has described Bond as a character tied to some of his earliest moviegoing memories and said he wants to honor the tradition while opening the path for future missions.

For now, Jack Lowden remains a candidate rather than James Bond

That is the safest line between what is known and what is merely suggested.

Oldman says someone has been selected. Knight's comments indicate he may already know more than he can discuss. Amazon MGM still has not publicly named an actor.

Until that announcement arrives, Lowden remains a reported contender with a very enthusiastic endorsement from Gary Oldman — not the officially confirmed new 007.
