Jennifer Lawrence has spent years resisting the idea that every famous person needs to become their own social media channel. Now she has an Instagram account.
She also has an exit strategy.
Lawrence launched @jlaw on September 9 — her full name was already taken — and followed it with her first Reel a day later. Sitting casually in front of the camera, she explained that she was willing to give Instagram a chance, provided nobody ruined it.
« If anyone says anything negative, I will quit. Immediately, no questions asked. »
She then escalated the joke by warning that merely thinking something mean might be enough. She would know.
Instagram has been warned
Lawrence carried the same idea into her Stories, asking followers to remember that aggressive comments could hurt “the baby.” The punchline arrived immediately afterward: she was the baby.
It is an unusually appropriate introduction for someone whose public persona has long been built around being funny without looking particularly interested in polishing every joke first.
The audience arrived anyway. Variety reported that Lawrence was nearing one million followers less than a day after joining, while People later put the account close to two million. Famous friends also appeared in the comments to welcome her.
She was never completely absent from social media
Lawrence's arrival is less dramatic when you remember that she admitted years ago to quietly using social platforms. In a 2018 interview, she described herself as a voyeur online: she watched what people posted but generally refused to join the public conversation herself.
The distinction mattered. She was not avoiding the internet because she did not understand it. She disliked the avalanche of reactions that came with speaking publicly on it.
That position made sense for an actor who became one of the world's most recognizable movie stars during the Hunger Games years and repeatedly watched ordinary interview clips turn into viral fragments. Lawrence has previously spoken about the discomfort of losing control once a quote leaves the room and starts circulating on its own.
A very Jennifer Lawrence following list
The account is already beginning to look less like a carefully managed corporate launch and more like someone's actual feed. Lawrence follows people including Josh Hutcherson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Dakota Johnson, Amy Schumer, members of the Kardashian family and her husband Cooke Maroney.
She also follows Miss Piggy.
That one has a professional connection: Lawrence and Emma Stone are developing a Miss Piggy movie together. Still, it is difficult to imagine a more fitting account sitting between Hollywood stars and filmmakers in her new feed.
Whether @jlaw becomes a regular celebrity account remains to be seen. For now, Lawrence has managed to spend years avoiding a public Instagram presence, attract a huge audience almost instantly, and make her first major statement a threat to abandon them all if they misbehave.
Not a bad first post.
