The title almost sounds like a comment on the reunion. Return to You brings Lindsay Lohan back to Mark Waters, who directed her in 2003's Freaky Friday and 2004's Mean Girls. Those two movies carry enough pop-culture weight that Netflix hardly needs to explain why seeing them work together again attracts attention.
This is not a sequel, however, nor is it directly connected to either comedy. Return to You is a new romantic feature written by Eric Champnella and led by Lohan and Henry Golding.
A DVD, a wrong recipient and the year 2008
Perhaps the most curious decision is the period setting. The story takes place in 2008, when receiving a DVD through the mail could still function as a perfectly plausible plot mechanism rather than a deliberately retro affectation.
Lohan plays a powerful but lonely attorney who mistakenly receives an intensely personal DVD. A dying woman recorded it for her husband. With only the clues contained on the disc to guide her, the attorney sets out to find the man who was supposed to receive it.
Netflix does not reveal much more about the story in its announcement. The company describes Return to You as a romance and confirms Golding alongside Lohan, while additional casting is still to come. The premise nevertheless has something many modern romances have largely lost: a physical object that can genuinely go missing, reach the wrong person and send a stranger looking for someone she has never met.
Lohan is no longer just the star
The Waters reunion is happening under very different circumstances from Mean Girls. Lohan is also producing Return to You alongside Brad Krevoy. Olivia Krevoy, Jimmy Townsend and Galen Fletcher serve as executive producers.
That makes the project a clear continuation of the relationship Lohan has rebuilt with Netflix. Falling for Christmas marked her return to leading romantic-comedy territory in 2022, followed by Irish Wish and Our Little Secret. Return to You keeps that partnership going while bringing back a director closely associated with the first phase of her career.
Waters is hardly new to Netflix romance either. Long after his early collaborations with Lohan, he directed He's All That, Mother of the Bride and La Dolce Villa for the service. The reunion is therefore less unlikely than its nostalgic appeal suggests: Netflix is putting together two collaborators who have independently become familiar parts of its romantic-film output.
Henry Golding completes the pairing
Henry Golding is the other confirmed star, and Netflix has yet to announce the rest of the cast. The pairing still gives the project an immediate identity. Golding has already led romantic films including Crazy Rich Asians and Last Christmas, while Lohan has made romance a major part of her recent Netflix run.
Return to You consequently has several hooks before a proper first look has even arrived: a romance deliberately set in 2008, a Lohan-Golding pairing and, above all, the third collaboration between Lohan and Waters more than two decades after their two best-known films together.
No Netflix date yet
Netflix says Return to You is now in production. A specialist production report places the start of principal photography on September 28 in Toronto, although Netflix's own introduction to the film does not provide a detailed shooting schedule.
There is no announced release date. Outside observers may infer a 2027 arrival from the production timetable, but Netflix has not confirmed such a window, so it should not be treated as an official launch period.
For now, the service is selling something simpler than a date: the appeal of seeing a creative partnership from more than two decades ago start moving again, appropriately enough in a story that is itself heading back in time.
