That makes today's release more interesting than a routine back-catalog drop. Guns of the Patriots has never previously been commercially ported away from PlayStation 3.
Master Collection Vol.2 now puts it on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Switch and Switch 2, beside Peace Walker and the Game Boy Color spin-off Ghost Babel.
MGS4 begins by dismantling its own action hero
Solid Snake is already visibly failing when the story starts. Accelerated aging has turned the legendary infiltrator into Old Snake, forcing the game to spend its final mission with a protagonist whose body can no longer support the image built around him.
The fan service is enormous, sometimes almost architectural. Characters return, old locations are revisited and plot lines accumulated across decades are hauled back into view.
Konami's port raises the technical ceiling rather than restructuring that work. Internal resolution and maximum frame rate have been improved, and controls can be customized. Metal Gear Online is not part of the package.
Peace Walker makes an unusually appropriate companion
The collection then jumps backward to Big Boss in 1974. Peace Walker is concerned with the process of creating an independent military organization: recruiting personnel, developing a base and turning soldiers into a self-sustaining force outside conventional national structures.
Placed next to MGS4, it creates a long and not entirely flattering arc. One game helps explain how the dream of an army without borders takes shape; the other opens in a world where military force has become a global marketplace.
The HD Collection version used here retains co-op and competitive online play, with Versus Ops supporting up to six people.
A non-canon branch survives too
Ghost Babel is not carrying the weight of the main saga. It does something valuable anyway: it preserves a version of Metal Gear that once existed on a Game Boy Color cartridge, following an alternate Solid Snake adventure at Galuade.
The modern wrapper includes rewind, pixel-perfect display, filters and control remapping. Its VS BATTLE mode has been left behind.
The books matter in a series obsessed with context
Master Collection Vol.2 includes screenplay books and master books for MGS4 and Peace Walker, plus the MGS4 Database. The database links characters, terminology and chronology across the series up to Guns of the Patriots.
It is an unusually appropriate extra for Metal Gear, a franchise in which understanding what happened often requires remembering who lied about what twenty years earlier.
Guns of the Patriots can now be bought on current hardware for the first time. That is the important part of August 27.
