Renegade, shown during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, gives that character more definition than the earlier trailers did. The Stranger is not returning to Moscow because he suddenly feels responsible for everybody living underground.

He is pursuing something personal. 4A Games is keeping exactly what that means hidden.

A station can fall before the soldiers arrive

Sevastopolskaya is one of the trailer's most useful narrative additions. It remains proudly independent, but Novoreich influence is already working through the place.

Agitators, propaganda and alcohol are undermining stability from within. Mercenary Raiders connected to the regime apply pressure from outside. The Stranger needs information there before continuing his pursuit.

It gives Hunter a presence without forcing him into every scene. A dictatorship can be represented by what people repeat, what they fear and which compromises start becoming normal inside a station.

Hunter's Metro has already changed before the player arrives

By 2039, the underground factions have been forced under a single authority. Hunter, the fanatical Spartan leading the Novoreich, rules through propaganda and fear while preparing the population for another war on the surface.

The Stranger approaches that system from outside. He has lived in exile beyond the city and suffers violent waking nightmares tied to a past 4A Games has only begun to describe.

The new story is being written in collaboration with Metro author Dmitry Glukhovsky. Deep Silver says it is original rather than an adaptation of one specific novel, with a new protagonist and cast intended to make the game accessible without requiring every previous entry.

Then the Dark Ones can be heard

The last moments of Renegade reopen a much older thread. As Hunter's violent mantra repeats, Deep Silver says the voices of the Dark Ones rise alongside it.

That is all the studio is confirming. The trailer does not establish a physical return, explain their relationship with the Stranger or reveal whether the voices belong to reality, memory or something stranger.

For now, they are voices.

Moscow is carrying a second history above ground

The surface imagery is full of things that existed before Metro's current politics: abandoned playgrounds, scattered bodies and civilian spaces left behind when nuclear war emptied the city.

4A Games is using those remnants beside the more familiar radiation and mutants, giving the Stranger's journey an older layer of human damage to move through.

Metro 2039 is scheduled for February 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That release window was announced in June and remains unchanged after Gamescom.
