Prime Video ended Outer Range on July 3, 2024, less than two months after releasing all seven episodes of Season 2. The series therefore stops at two seasons and fifteen episodes, with no third season announced.
That matters because the second season was not written like an ending. It expanded the rules of the void, scattered characters across different periods and pushed several relationships toward consequences that were clearly meant to continue.
The Western had finally become a time-travel story
Season 1 built its tension around Royal Abbott protecting his ranch, his family and a secret that should not exist. The science-fiction concept was always present, but the show often kept it deliberately distant.
Season 2 changed the balance. Perry landed in another timeline. Sheriff Joy Hawk was thrown into the nineteenth century and lived among her Shoshone ancestors. Autumn's connection to the Abbott family made the future part of the current family drama rather than an abstract possibility.
Joy's story in particular showed what the series could do once time travel stopped functioning merely as a puzzle box. Her displacement gave the supernatural mechanism consequences involving identity, ancestry and history instead of simply generating another question about the hole.
Josh Brolin was already thinking about Season 3
Before the cancellation, Brolin had spoken enthusiastically about continuing. He said he and showrunner Charles Murray had discussed ideas for a third season and suggested that he wanted the series to become stranger rather than safer.
That was consistent with his role behind the camera. Brolin was an executive producer and made his directing debut on the sixth episode of Season 2.
He had also been unusually candid about the show's first year, saying the original concept had not been taken as far as he wanted. Season 2 was partly an attempt to push harder into the material that made Outer Range different from a conventional ranch drama.
There is no clean endpoint waiting after the finale
The cancellation did not arrive after a self-contained conclusion. Outer Range still had unresolved timelines, a family divided by events occurring in different periods and major questions surrounding the void itself.
That leaves the existing two seasons in an odd position. The show remains a complete production in the literal sense, but not a completed story.
Both seasons remain available on Prime Video. As of September 2026, no Season 3, revival or continuation has been officially announced.
