Season 62 changes the scale of the original deal
Netflix and Sesame Workshop say their series agreement has been extended through Season 62. That commits the relationship several seasons beyond the reimagined Season 56 that marked Sesame Street's arrival as a source of new programming for the streamer.
The original arrangement was announced in May 2025. Netflix received worldwide premiere rights to new episodes and added 90 hours of older Sesame Street programming, while the new episodes remained available in the United States through PBS stations and PBS KIDS platforms. Season 56 premiered on November 10, 2025 with its redesigned format built around 11-minute stories.
Netflix has continued filling out that catalog. An official Sesame Street collection launched in June 2026 with more than 100 library episodes and specials. The latest announcement also places Season 57 Volume 4 on November 23, with Volumes 5 and 6 due in 2027.
There is one distinction worth preserving. The September 24 announcement explicitly extends the Netflix-Sesame Workshop series deal through Season 62. It does not state that the separate PBS arrangement has been extended through the same season. The PBS agreement announced in 2025 was described as multi-year, but the new material does not attach Season 62 to it.
The film exists, but several basic details do not
Netflix is also working with Sesame Workshop and production company Rideback on a new Sesame Street film. No public title, director, principal cast or release date was included in the announcement.
Netflix's own wording is unusually inconsistent on the project's current stage. Its corporate newsroom says the film is in development. A Tudum article published alongside the announcement calls it currently in production. Without further production details, the safest conclusion is simply that the project is underway with Netflix, Rideback and Sesame Workshop attached.
TheWrap additionally describes the movie as live-action. Netflix's corporate announcement does not specify the format, so that detail remains attributed to the trade report rather than presented as part of Netflix's own published description.
Sesame Street is becoming more than another licensed show
The expansion sits inside a much broader investment in children's programming. Netflix says kids programming represented nearly 15% of all views on the service during the first half of 2026 and has accumulated 106 billion viewing hours since the beginning of 2023. Those are Netflix's own measurements, but they provide useful context for the company's appetite for durable family brands.
Sesame Street already extends beyond the main series inside Netflix. The company has built out its library collection, incorporated the property into Netflix Playground and continued adding related programming. A feature film gives it another format without replacing the television agreement that brought the characters to the service in the first place.
Sesame Workshop still sits at the center of the property and its educational mission, while the distribution structure created in 2025 preserved free U.S. access to new episodes through PBS. What Netflix has secured through Season 62 is a long runway around that structure — and now a film project alongside it.
