The reunion is unusually complete for a sequel arriving more than two decades after the original movie.
Rachel McAdams returns as Amy Stone, Sarah Jessica Parker as Meredith Morton, Claire Danes as Julie Morton and Dermot Mulroney as Everett Stone. Craig T. Nelson is back as Kelly, Luke Wilson returns as Ben, Tyrone Giordano as Thad and Elizabeth Reaser as Susannah.
Paul Schneider and Brian J. White will also reprise Brad Stevenson and Patrick Thomas.
This time, Dad is bringing someone home
The sequel neatly reverses the premise that started the original. Twenty years after Sybil Stone's death, the family gathers for Christmas and receives an unexpected announcement from Kelly: he has fallen in love, and the woman in his life is coming to meet the family.
In 2005, Everett's decision to bring Meredith home turned Christmas into a long sequence of misunderstandings, shifting attractions and spectacularly uncomfortable meals. Now the siblings are older, their father is the one introducing a partner, and the family gets to discover whether it has become any better at welcoming outsiders.
Diane Keaton's absence cannot simply be written around
Diane Keaton died in October 2025. She played Sybil, the emotional center of the original film, and the sequel is explicitly set long after the character's death rather than attempting to replace or avoid her.
Bezucha had already been developing another Family Stone story before Keaton died. He later spoke about returning to the screenplay after her death and finding the work emotionally different.
That gives The Families Stone a more complicated reason to exist than simple cast nostalgia. The old ensemble can reunite. The family itself cannot return to exactly what it was.
Thomas Bezucha is keeping creative control
Bezucha wrote and directed The Family Stone in 2005, and he will perform both jobs again on the sequel.
That continuity is particularly relevant for a film whose tone was always difficult to reduce to one genre. The original could move from broad social embarrassment to romance and then into grief without becoming an entirely different movie.
Michael London and Shannon Gaulding are producing for Groundswell Productions. Sarah Jessica Parker and Alison Benson are producing through Pretty Matches Productions.
Searchlight has not yet announced who will play Kelly's new partner.
The original became more durable than its first reviews suggested
Released in December 2005, The Family Stone earned nearly $93 million worldwide. Reviews were mixed, but the film gradually settled into the holiday rotation and remained visible long after its theatrical run.
Its family is part of the reason. The Stones are affectionate without being automatically pleasant, progressive without being immune to cruelty, and capable of making their guest feel unwelcome while believing themselves to be entirely reasonable.
A 20-year jump gives Bezucha a lot of unfinished behavior to work with.
Production is moving ahead, but the calendar is still empty
Filming is expected to take place in New York this fall. Searchlight has not announced a release date, and there is no first-look footage or sequel key art yet.
One detail is settled. The official title is The Families Stone.
