The Mentalist — Patrick Jane smiles so he does not have to stare into the void
The Mentalist was never the most original procedural of its era, but few shows understood the value of a perfectly calibrated central character as well. Simon Baker turns Patrick Jane into a permanent performance, while Robin Tunney and the CBI ensemble gradually give him something he cannot manipulate or decipher quite so easily: lasting human bonds. Red John eventually exhausts some of the suspense he created, yet the series survives because the killer was never truly its subject. Jane was — his guilt, his performance and the possibility that after spending his life reading other people, he might finally learn how to remain with them.
