Coyote vs. Acme: The Case Is Won, Even If the Looney Tunes Anarchy Isn't

By Clarel

Coyote vs. Acme is not the lost masterpiece that its extraordinary industrial history could easily have created in people's imaginations. It is something simpler and ultimately more appealing: a genuinely good family comedy, strange enough to respect its characters and clever enough to turn Wile E. Coyote's chronic failure into more than a compilation of cliff dives. The legal plot becomes overloaded and the hybrid animation is not always elegant enough to survive comparisons with Roger Rabbit, but Dave Green and Samy Burch understand the essential point. Wile E. can lose this case, the next case and another ten thousand races against the Road Runner. The joke survives because he always gets back up.

PROS

The lawsuit against ACME smartly turns decades of cartoon gags into an actual story engine.
Will Forte and John Cena play things straight enough to let the Looney Tunes provide most of the absurdity.
Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety and numerous supporting Tunes receive amusing roles within the plot.

CONS

The ACME conspiracy eventually consumes too much space at the expense of both the jokes and the courtroom material.
A 103-minute feature stretches comic energy originally designed to explode in very short bursts.
