Insidious: Out of the Further — good nightmares trapped inside an all-too-familiar house

By Clarel

The invasion promised by the title ultimately feels much smaller than expected. Jacob Chase still knows how to build a disturbing image, hold a beat slightly too long before a scare, and turn routine dentistry into something almost unbearable. That is enough to preserve the pleasurable haunted-ride quality of a sixth Insidious film. But whenever those set pieces need to connect into a story, the movie retreats into themes and mechanisms the franchise now knows by heart. It is a respectable and occasionally very effective continuation that finds new monsters without quite recovering the invention that once made the Further so unnerving.

PROS

Several genuinely inventive scare sequences, particularly the dental and pillow-fort set pieces
Direction that occasionally recaptures the franchise's taste for impossible spaces and threatening backgrounds
Amelia Eve gives Gemma enough vulnerability and presence to carry the change of family

CONS

A heavily familiar generational-trauma storyline that is rarely explored with much depth
Gemma's new ability promises a major expansion of the Further that the movie never fully exploits
