The Transformers: The Movie: 85 Minutes of Metal, Rock and Grief

By Clarel

The Transformers: The Movie remains a fascinating contradiction: a film designed to refresh a toy line that handles that refresh with enough brutality to scar a generation. Its first third is terrific, its middle far more scattered, and its finale recovers the cosmic scale promised by Unicron just in time. Nelson Shin never turns the enormous cast into a perfectly coherent narrative, but he gives the film movement, color and a sense of scale that have aged remarkably well. You have to accept the guitars, lasers and commercial decisions visible from orbit. In return, the movie still delivers something many later Transformers blockbusters spent much longer searching for: clear visual form, readable silhouettes and robots whose deaths can actually matter.

PROS

The battle for Autobot City remains an unusually dense yet readable piece of animated action.
More detailed animation and a cosmic scale give the movie a visual ambition the television series could not match.
Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Leonard Nimoy and Orson Welles give the robots an almost disproportionate vocal gravitas, which turns out to be exactly right.

CONS

The movie assumes considerable familiarity with its universe and throws too many characters at anyone arriving without an instruction manual.
After Autobot City, the story fractures across Quintessons, Junkions, Unicron and several separated groups of heroes.
