Les Héros du Louvre: a remarkable true story shaken almost to exhaustion

By Clarel

Les Héros du Louvre possesses something filmmaking technique cannot manufacture: a deeply personal reason to exist. Élie Chouraqui takes a family story handed down since childhood and places it inside the very real evacuation of the Louvre's collections. That sincerity runs through the film, supported by Kad Merad, Marie Gillain and an inherently compelling subject. Unfortunately, it must compete with direction that seems afraid of stillness. Restless camerawork, insistent close-ups, forced momentum and broadly drawn supporting characters keep tugging at scenes that often needed less emphasis, not more. What remains is a generous and moving historical drama, valuable for the memory it restores, but ultimately stronger as an act of transmission than as a piece of cinema.

PROS

A fascinating and comparatively underrepresented piece of wartime history
The family connection gives the film unmistakable sincerity
Kad Merad balances warmth, anxiety and determination effectively

CONS

Excessively restless handheld camerawork can damage clarity
The screenplay often underlines emotions the situations could communicate on their own
