Pressure — Andrew Scott turns the D-Day forecast into a gripping war-room thriller

By Clarel

Pressure succeeds where its premise looked destined for dryness: it makes weather charts, atmospheric fronts and scientific conviction feel genuinely suspenseful. Anthony Maras never entirely transforms the source play into expansive war cinema, but Andrew Scott hardly needs him to. His James Stagg makes the weight of thousands of lives register behind every forecast. The film remains conventional and occasionally too neat in its conflicts, yet it finds real drama in a distinctly uncinematic form of courage: telling powerful men that the data says they are wrong.

PROS

Andrew Scott is superb in a role built on restraint and conviction
A genuinely fresh scientific angle on an over-filmed historical event
Strong suspense despite an outcome everyone already knows

CONS

The stage origins remain visible in several stretches
Some added subplots awkwardly try to open up the material
