Aaron Sorkin spent years resisting the obvious sequel. He did not want to return to The Social Network just because the first film had become a classic. Frances Haugen and Jeff Horwitz eventually gave him a different reason to go back: Facebook itself had changed enough that the old story was no longer the useful one.
