Diablo IV Found Something More Unsettling Than a Simple Villain in Lilith

By Vever

Diablo IV's return to gothic horror succeeds because it is more than a visual filter. Sanctuary feels exhausted, its inhabitants have believable reasons to listen to Lilith, and the antagonist is compelling enough for her presence to outlive her own campaign. Later chapters are less consistent, but Lord of Hatred gives this long story of hatred a strong 2026 conclusion. For a series once content to place plot between massacres, the change is substantial.

PROS

Lilith remains one of the series' strongest antagonists
Gothic art direction supports the violence and despair of the setting
Several supporting characters receive genuine dramatic arcs

CONS

Vessel of Hatred deliberately ends with a strong sense of incompletion
Live-service structure fragments parts of the story across campaigns and seasons
