Graveyard Keeper 2 Finds Plenty of Life in Its Corpses, Less in Its Living Cast

By Vever

Graveyard Keeper 2 intelligently expands the macabre identity of its predecessor. Its world is beautiful, full voice acting gives dialogue new energy, and the partnership between the Keeper and sarcastic skull Larry is particularly effective. Rebuilding a town devastated by zombies also lets the series lean further into its strange mixture of comedy, catastrophe and medieval capitalism. Several reviewers, however, note that residents mainly function as sources of quests, goods or progression gates. Where Stardew Valley often structures days around relationships, Graveyard Keeper 2 continues to structure them around labor. That choice gives the game much of its identity while limiting attachment to its cast.

PROS

Full English voice acting gives dialogue substantially more character
Dark humor maintains an identity unlike most cozy simulations
Larry and the Keeper form an effective sarcastic pairing

CONS

Residents rarely have the relational depth common to the broader life-sim genre
Some characters primarily exist to distribute quests and services
