Mortal Shell II was Playstack's biggest bet, and early reviews suggest it paid off

Mortal Shell II launches August 20 with an 85 OpenCritic average. Behind that strong reception is an equally interesting industry story: Playstack described the sequel as its largest-ever investment in a game, while Cold Symmetry expanded to an independent team of roughly thirty people to attempt a major increase in scale.

Mortal Shell II: eight dead warriors finally give its world a face

Mortal Shell II finds more of its identity when bodies become stories rather than classes. Eight Shells and their memories finally give substance to a mythology that remained fairly abstract in the original. Its world still borrows heavily from Souls vocabulary, but its strongest grotesque images now clearly belong to Cold Symmetry.

PROS

Eight Shells have substantially deeper narrative identities
More distinctive grotesque imagery
Varied world with memorable locations

CONS

Several environments remain strongly derivative
Narrative is still deliberately elliptical
