No Man's Sky — Ten Years Later, Its History Is Almost as Fascinating as Its Universe

By Vever

Ten years after launch, No Man's Sky has become an almost unique example of a game whose identity was publicly constructed after release. Its original solitary universe still exists, but now cohabits with communities, expeditions, settlements, crews and The Swarm, which attempts to turn the entire player population into participants in a shared war. Not every new activity has equal depth, and sheer abundance can occasionally dilute the strangeness of the original game. Yet its spacebound melancholy survives underneath all that content. No Man's Sky did not replace its first idea; it built enough paths for different players to approach it differently.

PROS

Immediately recognizable science-fiction identity
Solitude remains possible despite multiplayer expansion
Voyagers gives genuine meaning to the idea of a crew

CONS

System abundance can dilute the elegance of the original concept
Writing and characters remain secondary to systemic experience
