Once Human Is Much Better When Its Apocalypse Stops Talking

By Vever

Once Human deserves to be explored more than it deserves to be told. Its monster design, corruption of mundane objects and abandoned environments give Nalcott an unusual identity among online survival games. Rosetta, Stardust and the Meta-Humans provide a functional framework, but dialogue, exposition and tonal shifts never match the confidence of the imagery. As conventional storytelling it remains mediocre. As a collection of strange post-apocalyptic visions, it can be remarkable.

PROS

A genuinely identifiable New Weird art direction
Several monsters rank among recent survival gaming's most memorable designs
Corrupting mundane objects creates stronger strangeness than another zombie apocalypse

CONS

A confusing central story overloaded with jargon
Uneven dialogue and voice performances
