Pokémon Omega Ruby review: Hoenn shows how a remake can rewrite a memory

By Vever

Omega Ruby does not turn the 2003 plot into sophisticated drama, and Team Magma's plan to awaken Groudon and expand the continents remains gloriously difficult to defend. Its cultural interest lies elsewhere. Game Freak revisits a generation old enough to have become childhood memory and chooses what to preserve, exaggerate and reinterpret. Mauville changes, Maxie gains a stronger presence, Primal Groudon gives the old environmental conflict greater scale, and the Delta Episode connects Hoenn to modern Pokémon mythology. The result is sentimental without being merely nostalgic.

PROS

Hoenn gains tremendous personality from its 3D reconstruction
Team Magma receives a much stronger visual and narrative identity
The Delta Episode meaningfully expands the remake's mythology

CONS

The central plot remains simple and predictable
Team Magma's motivation is spectacular but fundamentally absurd
