Rivage: a beautiful station where the missing crew slowly comes alive

By Clarel

Rivage succeeds most clearly in giving memory to an empty place. A.R.E.S. tells stories about its occupants long before the plot supplies every answer, with voices, objects and messages doing work that another game might hand to lengthy cutscenes. The loop is less consistent as a dramatic device: it can deepen the isolation, then interrupt the pacing with another sequence of repeated travel. The result is a carefully built sci-fi mystery whose setting and missing crew often leave a stronger impression than its biggest revelations.

PROS

A remarkably detailed and coherent space station
The absent crew is built through rooms, messages and recordings
Voice performances are repeatedly praised across reviews

CONS

Narrative pacing is too dependent on puzzle roadblocks
The time-loop concept feels less dramatically developed than its premise suggests
