Sea of Thieves Is Becoming a Stage for Player-Made Pirate Stories

The classic Sea of Thieves story usually begins with a plan that went wrong. Custom Seas introduces the opposite possibility: decide in advance how many pirates will appear, where they will fight, who will referee the chaos and where the camera should be when everything explodes.

Sea of Thieves: The Best Pirate Story Is Usually the One Nobody Wrote

By Vever

Rare created one of gaming's most convincing pirate fantasies by refusing to narrate every important moment for the player. It provides a place, a set of readable rules and strangers who cannot be controlled. The beautiful sea, physical comedy, music, Tall Tales and years of added content now give the setting far more substance than it had in 2018. Not every mechanic is equally refined, particularly combat on foot, but Sea of Thieves still achieves something rare for a long-running service game: an evening can produce a story nobody else experienced in quite the same way.

PROS

Immediately recognisable visual and audio identity
Exceptional generator of emergent stories between players
Sailing makes the fantasy of being a pirate crew convincing

CONS

Some mechanical activities eventually reveal their repetition
Session quality depends heavily on other players
