Tears of the Kingdom turns Hyrule into a legend the player can take apart

By Vever

Tears of the Kingdom pulls off the difficult trick of returning to the same Hyrule without making six years of development feel like additional floors bolted onto an old map. The world remembers the previous game, its people have moved on, Zelda becomes the emotional center, and several images belong among the series' great mythic moments. The nonlinear structure is less kind to a story that sometimes needed control over its own order.

PROS

Zelda has a much stronger narrative and emotional role
Hyrule convincingly feels as though time passed after Breath of the Wild
Supporting characters and regional stories feel better integrated

CONS

Memories can be discovered in an order that weakens or prematurely reveals major turns
Several Sage sequences repeat very similar exposition
