Valheim 1.0 review: a Viking saga that tells its best stories when nobody writes them

By Vever

Valheim explains very little and evokes a great deal. Its mythology works because Odin glimpsed through rain, Thor crossing a storm or a shared hall built with friends can carry more weight than pages of lore text. Version 1.0 finally provides a destination and more direct narrative framing, but wisely leaves the game's greatest storytelling device intact: players rarely remember the boss description as vividly as the shipwreck that happened on the way there.

PROS

Instantly recognizable Norse atmosphere
Emergent stories become exceptionally strong in co-op
The contrast between warm homes and hostile wilderness creates real emotional identity

CONS

Explicit storytelling remains thin for players seeking characters and dialogue
Several biomes can exhaust the pacing instead of enriching the journey
