Warframe: Behind the Space Ninjas Is a Strange Epic That Never Stopped Changing Genre

By Yasmine

Warframe has undergone one of the strangest narrative evolutions in live-service games. Its opening barely explains the world; later cinematic quests construct dense mythology around the Tenno, Orokin, Sentients, the Void and characters whose meanings can change completely after a single revelation. Warframe: 1999 shifted the formula again toward a more intimate cast, while The Old Peace explored memories of the Old War and prepared the path to Tau. That abundance is also the weakness: newcomers must cross an enormous amount of content before reaching the story arcs everybody discusses, and even veterans can lose track of the chronology. Despite that continuity debt, Warframe's universe remains remarkably distinctive.

PROS

Immediately recognizable science-fiction mythology
Major quests can intelligently recontextualize dozens of earlier hours
Warframe: 1999 gives characters and relationships more room

CONS

The strongest story material arrives very late for newcomers
Early planets give a deeply incomplete impression of the eventual narrative
