Rogue Trader: Warhammer 40,000 Finally Becomes a Great Political RPG

By Yasmine

Rogue Trader achieves something relatively few Warhammer 40,000 adaptations seriously attempt: it turns the Imperium into more than a cool backdrop full of armor. Its characters, choices and black humor portray a monstrous civilization that still contains people worth caring about. The pacing stumbles, but the Koronus Expanse remains one of videogames' richest places to understand — and occasionally defy — the 41st millennium.

PROS

Writing that genuinely understands the institutional violence and absurdity of the Imperium
Strongly differentiated companions representing competing views of the 41st millennium
Convictions are integrated into dilemmas rather than functioning as a detached morality meter

CONS

Uneven campaign pacing, with Chapter 2 considerably freer than the closing acts
The sheer amount of terminology and text can exhaust less patient readers
