Space Marine 2 Turns Warhammer 40K Into a Blockbuster Without Scrubbing Away the Gothic Filth

By Vever

Space Marine 2 is more interesting for how it materialises Warhammer 40,000 than for the actual story it tells. Avarax, battle barges, Cadian regiments and the Adeptus Mechanicus finally give the eternal war the grotesque scale decades of artwork have promised. Titus, Gadriel and Chairon remain stiff characters and the plot loses focus in its second half. As an entry point to the setting, however, the game performs a difficult trick: it explains relatively little while showing an enormous amount.

PROS

One of gaming's most convincing representations of Warhammer 40K
Monumental scale extending far beyond the three playable Marines
Extensive lore communicated directly through environments and situations

CONS

A fairly conventional central plot
Titus is intentionally closed-off and can be frustrating as a protagonist
