Wuthering Waves Had a Fascinating World and No Idea How to Tell Its Story

By Vever

Wuthering Waves has become narratively much better than its opening hours suggest. The Lament, Tacet Discords and the relationship between memory, frequency and identity create a distinctive science-fiction mythology, while Rinascita finally gave Kuro Games quests capable of staging that world instead of merely explaining it. The game remains verbose, some characters can feel suspiciously aligned with upcoming banners, and Rover receives an almost embarrassing amount of admiration. Yet beneath the uneven writing is now an adventure far more alive than the 2024 prologue promised.

PROS

Distinctive post-apocalyptic science fiction built around sound and frequency
Art direction became far more expressive in post-launch regions
Rinascita substantially improves quest staging and variety

CONS

A notoriously slow and poorly paced prologue
An avalanche of proper nouns makes the setting harder to understand than necessary
