Warner Bros. Discovery and Nippon TV announced the new Japanese distribution arrangements on September 1.

A dedicated HBO Max hub will launch inside Hulu Japan on October 1.

On the same date, HBO Max will become available as an add-on subscription through Prime Video.

Warner Bros. Discovery says HBO Max itself will be available in Japan only through those two services from that date.

Hulu subscribers get HBO Max Standard at no additional cost

The Hulu Japan arrangement is the simpler of the two.

Its subscribers will receive the HBO Max Standard tier without paying another subscription fee.

The Warner Bros. Discovery catalog will appear through a dedicated HBO Max area inside Hulu rather than requiring a separate account and application.

Nippon TV controls Hulu Japan, making the agreement broader than a conventional license for a handful of HBO shows.

Prime Video will sell Standard and Premium tiers

Amazon is using its familiar subscription-partner model.

HBO Max Standard will cost ¥1,000 per month in Japan and provide up to 1080p resolution with two simultaneous streams.

Premium will cost ¥1,400 per month, offer compatible programming in up to 4K UHD and permit four simultaneous devices.

Customers remain inside the Prime Video application, allowing Amazon to handle billing, discovery and subscription management.

There is no need for a separate HBO Max app

That makes the Japanese model notably different from markets where Warner Bros. Discovery sells HBO Max directly to consumers.

The company is using the interfaces, accounts and payment systems of established local platforms instead.

The approach reduces one obvious point of friction: another account and application are not necessarily required for a viewer to start using the service.

It also gives WBD access to audiences already paying Amazon or Hulu Japan for entertainment.

HBO Max content was already available in Japan

October 1 should not be described as the first time Japanese viewers can watch HBO Max programming.

U-NEXT already carries a substantial HBO, Max Originals, Warner Bros., Harry Potter and DC catalog under an earlier partnership.

As recently as August 2026, U-NEXT was advertising approximately 2,500 HBO Max titles and 16,000 episodes to its monthly subscribers at no additional charge.

The September announcement is therefore primarily about expanding branded HBO Max distribution through new dedicated hubs.

Warner Bros. Discovery says Prime Video and Hulu Japan will become the outlets for the HBO Max service itself from October 1.

Harry Potter is already being used as the headline attraction

The upcoming HBO Original Harry Potter series receives unusually prominent placement in the announcements.

Its first season is scheduled for Christmas and is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Warner Bros. Discovery APAC president James Gibbons specifically points to the strength of the Harry Potter franchise among Japanese audiences.

Launching the new distribution setup in October gives the services time to establish themselves before one of HBO's highest-profile upcoming series arrives.

The launch catalog extends far beyond HBO

The service will not consist only of programming carrying the HBO label.

Warner Bros. Discovery lists Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Euphoria, Sex and the City and DC Studios' Lanterns among its HBO offerings.

Max Originals include The Pitt and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.

Warner Bros. Television brings titles such as Friends and The Big Bang Theory.

The announced film selection includes Barbie, One Battle After Another, the Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings collections and DC movies.

HBO Max is therefore functioning as the consumer storefront for several WBD brands rather than merely as an online version of HBO.

Hulu Japan wants to strengthen its position in international television

The partnership fits a clearly stated ambition at Hulu Japan.

President Tadahisa Dosaka says the platform aims to become Japan's leading domestic destination for international series.

HBO Max immediately adds a large library of recognized American franchises and continuing premium series.

Hulu can still combine that catalog with Nippon TV programming, Hulu Japan originals and live events inside the same service.

The strategy is therefore aggregation rather than turning Hulu into a Japanese replica of HBO Max.

The agreement also points in the opposite direction

One of the most significant elements may eventually involve Japanese content leaving the country rather than American content entering it.

Nippon TV and Warner Bros. Discovery say they will explore international distribution of Nippon TV and Hulu Japan local programming through HBO Max.

That could provide Japanese productions with access to markets where HBO Max already has distribution.

No specific show has been announced for that initiative yet.

It remains a strategic component of the partnership rather than a confirmed international slate.

Nippon TV sees an opportunity for its formats as well as finished programs

Nippon TV already has a long history of exporting programming and television formats.

Its announcement highlights unscripted formats developed through Gyokuro Studio as well as dramas that have gained recognition internationally.

The company presents the WBD relationship as another route for expanding that business.

Modern streaming partnerships can therefore involve more than licensing a finished Japanese show.

They can also create opportunities for formats, remakes and intellectual property to travel between markets.

Amazon is playing the aggregator role

Prime Video approaches the deal from another direction.

Amazon already allows users to buy multiple outside streaming subscriptions through its application while keeping billing and discovery in one place.

HBO Max becomes another service inside that infrastructure.

For WBD, it creates access to existing Prime customers without having to build the entire commercial relationship independently.

For Amazon, every major third-party subscription makes Prime Video a more useful gateway even when Amazon does not own the programming.

4K is also part of the upsell

Prime Video's two-tier structure is not only about concurrent streams.

Standard tops out at 1080p.

Premium includes up to 4K UHD on compatible content and devices.

The Japanese launch material also highlights Prime Video features including offline downloads, unified search and data-usage management.

Hulu Japan, meanwhile, is including the Standard tier in its existing subscription.

The two routes therefore do not provide identical commercial or technical propositions.

WBD calls this a new phase rather than its first contact with Japan

James Gibbons says HBO Max has already experienced strong increases in engagement and awareness in Japan.

That language reflects the existing availability of WBD programming in the market.

Hulu and Prime Video are described as ways to broaden distribution for the next phase.

That distinction matters in streaming, where the word launch can refer to a new app, a new branded hub or simply another distribution partner.

Japan is becoming a test of streaming growth without app proliferation

HBO Max is a global brand large enough to pursue a direct customer relationship.

In Japan, Warner Bros. Discovery is choosing not to make that the central model.

Its programming will instead sit behind two interfaces consumers may already use and two very different subscription structures.

Hulu absorbs the Standard tier into its membership.

Prime Video sells HBO Max as an add-on.

And in return for bringing more American programming into Japan, Nippon TV gains a potential route for moving Japanese programming in the other direction.

On October 1, HBO Max will therefore gain more than two new menu icons. Warner Bros. Discovery will be testing whether a global streaming brand can grow by asking viewers to install less, not more.
