Disney+ and The Pokémon Company International announced a global distribution agreement on August 28. The headline new production is Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu, a stop-motion series debuting on Disney XD and streaming exclusively worldwide on Disney+ in 2027.

The combination is immediately distinctive. Pichu is an obvious family-programming mascot. Sirfetch’d is a stranger choice: a Galar Pokémon whose entire identity is built around behaving like a knight while carrying a leek as a sword.

Aardman gets to build a Pokémon story without Trainers

The series is told from the Pokémon's perspective. Sirfetch’d and Pichu travel through Galar trying to help and protect other Pokémon, with their supposedly noble missions regularly going wrong.

Aardman director Tom Parkinson describes the pairing as an odd-couple friendship. Sirfetch’d is earnest, noble and somewhat bumbling; Pichu is playful and curious but frequently ends up as the sensible one.

That dynamic fits a studio that has spent decades creating comedy through character movement, physical objects and tiny visual reactions. The new teaser shown at Pokémon XP leans hard into that craftsmanship, filling Galar with textured plants, rocks, trees and handmade-looking creatures.

The deal reaches backward as well as forward

Pokémon the Series: The Beginning is the other major piece announced under the agreement. It returns to Ash and Pikachu's early adventures and began airing on Disney XD in August. It is also streaming on Disney+ in the United States and selected international markets.

The two projects serve very different purposes. One gives Disney access to some of the most recognizable material in Pokémon television history. The other gives the service something genuinely new that cannot be confused with the main anime.

Disney gets distribution, not ownership of the Pokémon machine

This is a distribution agreement rather than an acquisition of Pokémon itself. The Pokémon Company International produces Pokémon Tales, with Aardman handling the stop-motion production, while Disney Kids & Family has acquired the series for global distribution.

That distinction makes the partnership useful to both sides. Disney+ adds one of the world's most recognizable entertainment brands without needing to own it. Pokémon gains a global streaming platform with an enormous family audience while retaining its wider cross-media structure.

Sirfetch’d may be the smartest choice in the announcement

Pikachu's younger form supplies instant familiarity, but Sirfetch’d gives the show its comic engine. His knight persona provides a set of rules for him to take far too seriously, while Pichu can puncture that dignity whenever the quest begins falling apart.

It also allows the series to use Galar without retelling Pokémon Sword and Shield. The region becomes a setting rather than an adaptation obligation.

Aardman and Pokémon have not announced a specific premiere date beyond 2027. The streaming destination is settled, though: Disney+ will be the worldwide exclusive home of Sirfetch’d and Pichu's misadventures.
