Donutal launched for PC on September 3. Its International Space Port has been built on the remains of the former International Space Station, now acting as a gateway between Earth and a much larger extraterrestrial community.

The player wakes after 150 years in cryosleep and is immediately given the authority to decide which visitors can cross that gateway.

Aliens have become an immigration question

The game's visitors are deliberately difficult to place into one comfortable category. Some arrive for tourism or study. Others are immigrants or asylum seekers. Criminal intentions can also be hidden among apparently ordinary applications.

Earth has reasons to welcome them. Arc System Works describes extraterrestrial knowledge and technology as potential answers to problems the planet has failed to solve itself.

Suspicion is therefore useful, but indiscriminate suspicion can carry its own cost.

Nobody speaks in a social vacuum

Applicants are screened in groups of up to eight, and two can be brought into the interview room simultaneously. Their relationship changes the information available.

A lover may protect somebody. A rival may expose them. Members of hostile species can react differently when forced into the same conversation.

That makes identity partly relational. Donutal is interested not only in what a character claims to be, but in how that claim survives contact with somebody who knows them.

The assistant can explain procedure, not morality

DOLPHIN accompanies the player through the work. The android provides operational support but, according to Arc System Works' character description, has no authority to make moral judgments.

It is an efficient narrative boundary. Technology can organise the inspection without absorbing responsibility for the final decision.

The newly awakened human still has to press the button.

Consequences arrive as news

The following morning reports what happened after previous admissions and rejections. Decisions are therefore reflected back through the condition of Earth rather than remaining abstract values in a hidden morality system.

Some consequences can be irreversible. The broader story branches according to those judgments, eventually affecting whether the protagonist repays a mysterious debt, reaches Earth and what kind of Earth is left to reach.

A very large future seen through a very small checkpoint

Donutal uses a familiar science-fiction scale without requiring the player to fly across it. Civilisations, rivalries and social histories enter one inspection room a few people at a time.

The game costs $9.99 on Steam. A limited early-purchase package includes its 13-track original soundtrack.

Humanity made contact with the stars and eventually invented the extraterrestrial immigration interview.
