All seven episodes arrive on Netflix on October 1. Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames, with Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask. Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders fill out a story designed to move across generations rather than settle around one section of the book.
Cathy is no longer waiting at the edge of the adaptation
Zoe Kazan has made Cathy's perspective one of the defining choices of the series. That does not mean turning Steinbeck's antihero into a conventionally sympathetic protagonist. Kazan has spoken about finding the person inside the archetype without excusing what Cathy does.
That gives Pugh an unusually tricky dramatic position. Cathy can remain frightening and destructive while the series spends enough time with her to make those qualities something more complicated than a plot device affecting Adam, Charles, Cal and Aron.
The trailer leans into that discomfort. Cathy attracts attention immediately, but the material is not asking viewers to trust her.
Zoe Kazan has a family history with this book
There is an unavoidable connection behind the camera. Zoe Kazan's grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the celebrated 1955 film starring James Dean. His adaptation focused on a relatively small later portion of Steinbeck's novel, particularly the story of Cal Trask.
The Netflix series is attempting something structurally different. Kazan wrote all seven episodes and co-showruns with Jeb Stuart, with the adaptation following the wider Trask and Hamilton saga over decades.
Garth Davis directs Episodes 1 through 4. Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre handles Episodes 5 through 7.
Seven hours give the family saga room to exist
East of Eden is difficult to compress because repetition is part of its design. Adam and Charles Trask establish one fractured brotherhood, while Cal and Aron later inherit another variation on the same Cain and Abel pattern. Cathy cuts through those generations in ways that affect far more than one central romance.
Netflix says the series stretches from the era of the American Civil War to World War I. Time is therefore not simply background information; it is part of how consequences move from parents to children.
Seven episodes will still require choices. It is simply a very different amount of space from a feature film.
Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist start the cycle
Abbott's Adam and Faist's Charles carry the earlier Trask conflict, with Joseph Zada and Joe Anders later appearing as Cal and Aron. Ciarán Hinds plays Samuel Hamilton, Hoon Lee is Lee, Tracy Letts is Cyrus Trask and Martha Plimpton plays Faye.
It is a large cast because the book demands one. East of Eden is ultimately less interested in a single protagonist's journey than in what families pass down, deliberately or otherwise.
The complete series arrives October 1
Netflix will release all seven episodes globally on October 1, 2026. Pugh also serves as an executive producer, while FIFTH SEASON and Anonymous Content are co-studios on the production.
The famous film made Cal Trask the image many viewers still associate with East of Eden. This version is making a different first impression. Cathy Ames gets there before him.
