NextGenium released Godreaper's first substantial gameplay presentation on September 5 and opened applications for a closed playtest containing more than four hours from its opening act.
The game is planned for PC in 2027.
Zaremire begins with the figure of the bogatyr
The protagonist is described as a bogatyr, drawing on the heroic-warrior tradition of East Slavic epic folklore.
Godreaper is not presenting itself as a literal adaptation of those stories. It uses that figure as the centre of a new dark-fantasy mythology.
Zaremire crosses forests, swamps, mountains, ancient temples and abandoned settlements while searching for his family. NextGenium also invokes figures such as Baba Yaga and Koschei as part of its reinterpretation.
The gods are still present, which is exactly the problem
The disaster begins at the roots of the World Tree. An unknown corruption poisons them and spreads into the gods who once maintained order.
Those guardians become mad tyrants rather than distant memories.
That gives the title a fairly direct meaning. Godreaper is not simply borrowing divine names for lore entries; Zaremire is being positioned against powers that once belonged to the world's old order.
Navi is affecting the landscape as well as the bestiary
Creatures from Navi overrun ruined settlements, while strange growths associated with it can physically block routes.
Elemental abilities interact with those spaces. Fire burns away certain growths, frost can extinguish flames and electricity can help pierce darkness.
The supernatural therefore has a mechanical footprint. The world's cosmology is not completely separate from the routes the player can and cannot take.
Even weapons are being treated as spiritual objects
Godreaper includes three categories of levitating weapons that NextGenium describes as possessing souls of their own.
They can act independently, distract an enemy and attack from another angle while Zaremire remains engaged elsewhere.
Their full progression will not be available in the first playtest, one of several reminders that the upcoming build is a development slice rather than a polished release demo.
The setting has to do more than provide unusual scenery
NextGenium openly names God of War and Elden Ring among Godreaper's influences, particularly around boss design and the physical weight of combat.
East Slavic folklore is therefore carrying much of the responsibility for making the game feel like more than another variation on a familiar action-RPG structure.
That distinction will depend on depth rather than costume. Wooden settlements and regional ornament are easy to recognise; the more interesting question is whether ideas such as Navi, ensouled weapons, bogatyrs and the corrupted World Tree continue shaping quests and systems after the first visual impression.
The playtest reaches deep enough to expose that structure
The closed build runs from the Damp Dungeon through the Ancient Bridge of the Volots to Naven's citadel. NextGenium lists more than ten standard enemy types, two bosses and three side quests.
The final world map, bestiary, several cinematics and parts of character progression remain outside this version.
Godreaper is currently scheduled for Windows in 2027, with closed playtest applications available through Steam.
